Regular Practice
Regular, structured practice is essential for students preparing for piano exams and strongly encouraged for all learners aiming to make steady progress.
This page outlines the recommended practice expectations and strategies, whether preparing for grades or learning for personal development.
Practice for Exam Students
For students working towards graded exams, as outlined on the Exam Preparation page, consistent daily practice is expected. A minimum of 20 minutes per day is recommended to maintain fluency and ensure gradual progress.
Students taking Grade 6 and above, or aiming for Merit or Distinction in lower grades should expect to practise for up to an hour each day. This allows sufficient time to cover all components of the exam in depth and refine performance to a high standard.
Structure
Practice time is typically divided between the main exam components:
- Set Pieces – improving fluency, expression, and stylistic understanding
- Scales & Arpeggios – developing technical security and evenness
- Sight-Reading – improving reading accuracy through daily short studies
- Aural Tests – strengthening listening, rhythm, and memory skills
These components are explained in more detail on the Exam Preparation page.
Students preparing for ABRSM Grade 6 or above will also need to complete Grade 5 Music Theory, which is a prerequisite for entry. Additional support is available as required.
Practice Without Exams
Students not taking exams are encouraged to practise regularly, but there is no fixed time requirement. The emphasis is on:
- Enjoying the instrument and exploring different styles of music
- Building coordination and fluency at a comfortable pace
- Establishing a regular habit without pressure
Supporting Practice at Home
Parents and guardians can play a key role in supporting practice, particularly for younger students. This might include:
- Creating a quiet, focused space for the instrument
- Encouraging consistent practice times each day
- Reviewing goals set during lessons where appropriate
