Exam Preparation

Piano Exam Preparation

Structured piano exam preparation is offered for students of all levels, following the ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses. Lessons are tailored to the individual, with a focus on confident performance and long-term musical development.

Exam Structure

Set Pieces
These are the main pieces students prepare and perform in the exam. They are chosen from a graded list and help develop musical confidence and expression.

Scales & Arpeggios
Short patterns of notes used to build coordination and technique. These form the technical part of the exam and are practiced regularly in lessons.

Sight-Reading
This involves playing a short piece at first sight, without having seen it before. It helps develop reading fluency and quick thinking at the keyboard.

Aural Tests
Listening exercises where students respond to music played by the teacher or examiner. This improves general musical awareness and memory.

Theory Support
Music theory explains how music works. It becomes especially important from Grade 6 onwards, as ABRSM requires a Grade 5 theory pass before moving higher.

Focus on Comprehension

A structured and supportive approach is taken to ensure each student develops a clear understanding of the exam material—not just the ability to play through it.

This depth of comprehension supports not only exam success but also broader musical confidence and long-term progress.

Practice Expectations

For exam preparation, 20 minutes or more of focused daily practice is recommended. This maintains fluency and avoids last-minute pressure.

Visit the Practice Guide for tips on how to make practice effective, even with limited time.
